Leer en español: 15 artistas dominicanos del Top 25 de ESENDOM que debes conocer: Elvis Martínez
From Santiago’s mountain tops to the corners of The Bronx, Dominican music has produced artists that have marked generations, challenged genres, and conquered global stages. At ESENDOM, we celebrate the cultural power of our music with a special list: “15 Dominican Artists from ESENDOM’s Top 25 That You Should Know”—a selection curated with both heart and musical insight, where each name represents not only talent, but history, identity, and legacy.
Our list is based on ESENDOM’s Top 25, a list we publish weekly featuring the hottest songs in the music scene.
Over the coming days, we will reveal one by one the names that make up this list, with in-depth profiles that honor their trajectory, impact, and cultural relevance. This is not a ranking; it is a living tribute.
We begin this musical journey with an essential figure of modern bachata: Elvis Martínez, better known as “El Camarón,” the man who turned everyday pain into eternal anthems. His story opens our series because of what it represents: authenticity, perseverance, and an unwavering loyalty to the Dominican soul.
“El trago en Las Terrenas” (Bachata) by Elvis Martinez has been in ESENDOM's Top 25 for several weeks, holding the top spot for several weeks.
🎤 Today we present the first of our fifteen: Elvis Martínez, El Camarón de la Bachata.

Elvis Martínez “El Camarón”: The Guardian of Authentic Bachata Who Turned Pain into Eternal Melodies
On the cobbled streets of San Francisco de Macorís, where dreams seem out of reach for children born into poverty, a boy named Elvis Martínez González was born on January 5, 1976—destined to become one of the most soulful voices of modern bachata. Known worldwide as “El Camarón,” he transformed the hardships of his childhood into the most moving melodies of the genre that defines the Dominican spirit.
Raised among twelve siblings in a family with limited resources, Elvis learned early that survival required sacrifice. While other children attended school, he shined shoes on street corners and kneaded bread in local bakeries, contributing every peso to help support his household. His formal education was cut short, but life taught him lessons no classroom could: the value of hard work and unbreakable determination.
His migration to New York in the early 1990s changed his destiny forever. There, a chance encounter with Lenny Santos (future member of Aventura) opened the door to the music world when Lenny introduced him to the art of guitar playing. It was not a coincidence—it was destiny at work. Lenny produced, recorded, and arranged Elvis Martínez’s debut album Todo se paga (1998), as well as his second album Directo al corazón (1999), alongside his brother Max Santos. Lenny handled most of the musical arrangements and guitar tracks, while Max recorded the bass tracks—all while they were simultaneously working on Aventura’s debut album.
The release of Todo se paga in 1998 marked the birth of a legend. Released under Premium Latin Music, the album was an instant hit and earned him the ACE Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, introducing the world to a voice that would revolutionize bachata. Songs like “Así fue” and “Me seguirás buscando” became instant heartbreak anthems, resonating with audiences drawn to their raw authenticity.
His rise to prominence as a leading bachatero came with albums like Directo al corazón (1999), Tres palabras (2002), and the award-winning Así te amo (2003), which won the Premio Casandra. His commercial peak came in 2005 with Yo soy más grande que él under Univisión Records, his best-selling album to date, featuring hits like “Yo no nací para amar” and “Tu traición.”
His collaboration with Romeo Santos on “Millonario” (2019) represented a mutual acknowledgment between two bachata titans: Romeo, the global innovator, and Elvis, the guardian of romantic tradition. Together, they created a track that honored the past while building bridges toward the future.
After more than 25 years of uninterrupted career, Elvis Martínez has proven that true art transcends trends and generations. His journey—from a shoeshine boy in San Francisco de Macorís to the world’s most prestigious stages—is an inspiration to millions who see in him living proof that dreams can come true through hard work and perseverance. “El Camarón” is not just an artist; he is a cultural institution that represents the endurance of authentic values in an era of accelerated music consumption.
Among my (Nelson Santana’s) favorite and most emblematic songs by Elvis Martínez are:
“Maestra,” “El profesor,” “Así fue,” “La luz de mis ojos,” “Directo al corazón (Por una moneda),” and “Millonario” (with Romeo Santos).
