Santo Domingo / New York — The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean’s most in-demand and most-visited sun destinations. The skies over this half-island are packed with air traffic, and JetBlue is among the airlines with the largest footprint in the Dominican Republic ever since June 2004, when it made Santiago de los 30 Caballeros its first international destination. JetBlue has launched “DR: Pride That Soars,” a campaign to choose the design of its first aircraft dedicated to the country’s cultural identity. The airline is asking the public to help by voting for one of three options.
Developed with three Dominican artists, the initiative aims to turn an airplane’s fuselage into a cultural showcase that connects people living on the island with those abroad in cities such as New York, Boston, Orlando, and Miami. From January 22 to February 1, interested voters can cast their ballot at VotaJetBlueRD.com. The winning design will be revealed in February and applied to an Airbus A320 that will begin operating this spring.
The Three Concepts Represent Different Visions of Dominican Identity:
Los Plebeyos, a graphic design collective with a social focus, proposes an aesthetic inspired by everyday life and national folklore: gastronomy, music, and family life.
Lena Tokens, an internationally recognized illustrator known for blending surrealism and nature, incorporates the colors of the Dominican flag with human figures that evoke creativity, tradition, and rhythm.
Willy Gómez, an art director and illustrator with more than 20 years of experience, combines neo-traditional influences and Art Nouveau to highlight Dominican music, nature, and coastal life.
JetBlue began operations in the Dominican Republic in June 2004, with Santiago as its first international destination. Today it offers flights to and from Santiago, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, and Punta Cana, and expects to operate more than 30 daily flights this spring.
