It has been 24 years, that on this same date, many New Yorkers woke up to what they thought would be a normal day, but that cruelty took it upon its hands to change the history and collective memory of the world. The world stood still with the fall of the the Twin Towers and everyone remembers where they were at the exact time they received the impactful news. To commemorate the memory of the people that perished that fateful date and the families affected, ESENDOM wants to highlight some of the articles that it has published on this date over the years. Let’s not let the memory, of the innocent people that died erode with time nor the ugly face of humanity when the mirage of absolute truths is given free rein.
Individual Recollections and Life Stories
In a 2018 piece featured in ESENDOM, Nelson Santana described his experience of that fateful day from his Brooklyn neighborhood. Transfixed before his television screen, he watched the horrifying live footage of aircraft striking the Twin Towers. He recounted powerful personal narratives that became etched in his mind: Sandra’s story—a survivor who defied instructions to remain at her workplace and made her way down more than 60 floors—and the account of Isidro Ottenwalder, a Dominican man who perished while employed at the Windows around the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center. These intimate accounts illuminate the profound human cost of the catastrophe, affecting both those who died and survivors who continue to bear physical and mental wounds from exposure to contaminated air and collective psychological trauma.

The Burden of Memory Through the Years
During the 20th commemoration of the terrorist attacks, ESENDOM’s editorial team, Emmanuel Espinal and Nelson Santana, conducted a conversation exploring the remembrance of that day and its enduring impact. They discussed their whereabouts during the assault, the pervasive sense of uncertainty that characterized those moments, and how that single day irrevocably altered countless lives. September 11th transcended mere statistics to become a watershed moment that reshaped global politics, domestic security measures, and diplomatic relationships worldwide.

Accountability and Resolution: Osama bin Laden’s Elimination
Ten years following the attacks, on May 1, 2011, President Barack Obama declared that Osama bin Laden had been eliminated in Pakistan by an elite U.S. Navy SEAL unit. This mission, culminating months of intelligence gathering, provided a sense of resolution for survivors and bereaved families. While the terrorist leader had attempted to rationalize his atrocities through religious rhetoric, his elimination marked the conclusion of a manhunt and the downfall of one of the 21st century’s most notorious figures.

An Enduring Impact
The September 11th terrorist attacks remain etched in memory not merely as an assault on American soil, but as an attack on all of humanity. Victims represented numerous countries, religions, and backgrounds, while many more continue to suffer from illnesses caused by toxic debris exposure or psychological wounds. When we examine the narratives from that day—encompassing Dominican survivors and casualties, through to the eventual apprehension of the orchestrator—it becomes evident that September 11th’s influence persists in our collective memory, historical record, and unwavering determination to preserve these memories for future generations.
