The arts are a stalwart pilar of culture in a society. Writing being one of the most fundamental ones, as it was the way to document the oral traditions that were passed on from generation to generation in primitive times. This invaluable way of preservation gave way to thinkers being able to eloquently paint pictures of their times through the art of poetry, novels and essays further giving a lens to cultural values. In the modern globalized society that we live in, an extra wrinkle was added with the advent of translation, which facilitated the exposition of said writings in other languages to other cultures. With this in mind, as Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month is coming to an end, we look to highlight through a Throw Back Thursday an ESENDOM piece on poet and author Aída Cartagena Portalatín. The article was part of a special 2017 series of Women in Translation which gave relevancy to the work of women making accessible Dominican writers works through translation.
