6th Dominican Film Festival is More than Merengue and Bachata: “We Are Cinema”

The Sixth Annual Dominican Film Festival in New York opens tomorrow, Tuesday, July 25 at the United Palace. The biggest and most important festival pertinent to the Dominican experience features a variety of cinematic genres and formats and closes on Sunday, July 30.

On Tuesday, July 18, 2017, 809 Sangría Bar and Grill in Inwood, Manhattan, hosted the festival’s press conference. Opening night will feature the film Carpinteros (Woodpeckers) by acclaimed filmmaker José María Cabral. Protagonist Julián finds love in the last imaginable place—Najayo prison in the Dominican Republic. Both he and his love interest, Yanelly, must keep their love a secret and do so by communicating via sign languages within the confines of prison walls.

This past Friday, ESENDOM held a contest with the winner having the opportunity to win tickets for the festival’s opening night. Miguel T. won the contest.
