Daylight saving time is in effect, signaling the annual New York City Marathon. A new champion was crowned while past champions won most races across men’s and women’s divisions.
Joyciline Jepkosgei Dethrones Multi-Time Champ in Debut
Twenty-five-year-old Joyciline Jepkosgei won this year’s contest, dethroning fellow Kenyan countrywoman and superstar Mary Keitany in the women’s division. Jepkosgei finished the race in two hours, 22 minutes and 38 seconds—seven seconds away from breaking the women’s record. Jepkosgei became the first person ever to win both the TCS New York City 26-mile marathon and the New York City Half-Marathon.
Keitany entered the race as the defending champion. She also won in 2014, 2015 and 2016. In addition, she won the London equivalent in 2011, 2012, and 2017.
World Record-Holder Geoffrey Kamworor Wins for the Second Time
Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor won this year’s men’s New York City Marathon, capturing his second title in three years.
Manuela Schär Wins Third Consecutive Race in Women’s Wheelchair Division
Manuela Schär from Switzerland won her third consecutive title in New York City’s Marathon. She also finished first in Boston and Chicago in 2019.
Daniel Romanchuk Continues to Reign Supreme in Men’s Wheelchair Division
Daniel Romanchuk barely beat Marcel Hugh of Switzerland by one second. The U.S. citizen won in Berlin, London, and Boston. His win in Boston made him the first man ever to win the wheelchair division. Today’s victory made him the first United States competitor to win the New York City Marathon in the wheelchair division.
Celebrity Sightings
Several celebrities participated in the New York City Marathon including actress Uzo Aduba, Good Morning America‘s Amy Robach, comedian Jon Glaser, Olympian Taylor Ritzer, and former football player Jason Sehorn, among others.
