The Dominican Studies Association Announces DSA2020Virtually@Hostos Biennial Conference and Call-for-Proposals

The 9th Biennial Dominican Studies Association Conference – DSA2020Virtually@Hostos – will be held virtually at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College on December 4-5, 2020. The theme of this year’s DSA conference is “Crisis of Truth, State of Emergency, and Social Responses: The Urgency of Dominican and Ethnic Studies in the Present Hour.”

The goal of the conference is to stimulate dialogue among scholars, artists, and cultural activists specializing in Dominican studies, and to create greater awareness of the complexities of class, race, gender, ethnicity and other areas of research pertaining to exclusion and injustice across the Americas. Like many academic activities and gatherings, the conference will take place remotely in light of the global pandemic.

DSA Co-chairs, Professor Silvio Torres-Saillant, Ph.D., of Syracuse University and Hostos Associate Dean of Community Relations Ana García Reyes shared their statement as follows: “We are pleased to invite educators, artists, academics, and cultural activists to submit proposals. We seek a variety of points of view and topics based on the conference’s theme. We are looking forward to reading the work of some of our most important thinkers. The committee will make final proposal selections after the call-for-proposals deadline of August 21, 2020
The full DSA2020Virtually@Hostos conference program will be announced in early September.”

The DSA call-for-proposals is open to interested participants. Please, submit a 300-word abstract of the proposed paper or panel in English or Spanish by August 21, 2020 using the following site: https://form.jotform.com/201528715360047

Topics for papers and panels include but are not limited to:  History, Citizenship, and Belonging; Science and the Environment; and Diaspora, Economy, and Empowerment. Please check the DSA’s website for further information:  http://dominicanstudiesassociation.org

Proposals should include institutional affiliation (if any) and current contact information for each participant. Notices of acceptance will be sent no later than September 15, 2020 and will include details about the virtual platform used for the conference and the technology relevant to particular papers or panels.

Due to the biennial’s online format, this year’s conference is being offered free of charge for both participants and panelists, though a $30 donation is requested to offset the technological costs of the 2022 DSA Biennial Conference.
